Facebook is the place to claim a piece of the pie. Not being on facebook when pursuing free marketing strategies would be almost a crime.
I want to talk today a little about one strategy which is called “TAGGING” and it was designed to share pictures or videos with people who are included in either one. If you are not familiar with tagging let me quickly explain. Tagging can be done by adding your facebook friends to a video or picture and it will show up on his or her wall.
But over time some eager marketers figured out a way that tagging can bring them closer to their goal when it comes to generating leads.
Over the last year or so, I have watched the explosion of the tagging strategies and for some reason I also became what I l like to call “Tagging Victim”. Now it is not as harsh as it sounds but I really thought that I would write a quick blog post to express my thoughts and concerns.
When it comes to marketing, tagging people in videos will expose you on the wall and eventually yourself to all the friends of that person. The concept is great but overtime it has become a little crazy, because marketers do it with people who either are in the same company or represent the same system.
Guys, if I represent XYZ Company and your represent the same what do you think happens if you tag me in your video? Can you say “delete” and your behind gets canned for good. Oh yeah as fast as you can say 1-2-3
It is the same like people of Coca Cola running against Coca Cola, Visa against Visa and McDonalds against McDonalds you get my point. It just makes no sense, and it also shows a lack of really caring what that person is all about and why he or she is on facebook.
Also people respond differently when it comes to tagging, some get annoyed and some will have a blast. But the bottom line is that is you use the tagging strategy make sure you check a few things
- Do not tag the same people over and over, it will burn the relations ship and most likely will get you ejected from their circle of friends.
- Make sure that what you promote in your video is not the same of your facebook friend. It would be unprofessional and also will burn the bridge of future project.
- If you have a picture, don’t go out and tag everyone, just tag the people in the picture. I am not the only one who does not care unless I am in it. I will see your posting at my home page.
Always remember, yes you might generate a lead, but you are taking the risk of burning a good relationship. Be professional and respect boundaries. Don’t become someone who seems to be a good guy who turns tagging into spam. Keep the relationship alive-Tag responsible

Great advertising strategy ! But how I can sure that people will click “Like” Button in my fan page by this way ?
Facebook is a gem for online marketers when used the right way of course! I have just found
I am happy to find this blog. I dont usually post, but I must say I found this post very informative. Good work. Hope to see more such posts.
Thank you Isaac
Thomas,
You’ve shared some great points with this post. There’s definitely been a tag explosion with Facebook this past year.
I agree with pretty much all of your points and just wanted to add that if you are providing a pure content video (no promotion of anything), if you are in my circle… by all means tag me.
I’ve seen a lot of people tag me lately that have never even said hello to me… At least say hello right?
I’ve worked hard to get myself out there and make a name for myself. I usually will send them a PM and just kindly address it.
I appreciate you writing this my friend.

Hey Yo, what a honor to see your comment on my blog my friend. And it absolutely makes sense when it comes to sharing valuable content in form of tagging. But like you said, say hello first, it is all in the relationship between 2 people.
Take care my friend, Thomas
Hey Thomas,
Great post and info about tagging, I’ve needed the pros and cons about this.:-)
Tracy Rewerts
Hey Tracy, thank you for your comments and I am glad you enjoyed my post.
Thomas
shoot cool story man.
Thanks
Excellent ideas. I don’t tag people because of this problem. You have given me ideas where I do see it can be used.
Thanks.
Thanks Alecia, there is nothing wrong with tagging. I use it myself but with the respect towards my new friendship to the person. Honor the relationship and good things will happen, without turning into a tagging monster……………
thanks Thomas for the great post. I am one of those people who gets irritated with the over use of tagging on Facebook. Your advice is great – hope people listen to what you have to say
Thanks for your comment. Nothing against tagging as long as it isn’t abused. I know facebook is already working to solve the problem and the sad part is that the ones who use it the way it was designed are the ones who lose.
