As a professional Chef I’ve always admired Julia Child and her accomplishments. Without her, our knowledge of french cuisine would not be where it is now. Her dedication opened the doors for amateur cooks to replicate what was know as a cooking art only well trained Chefs know how to master.
Her best selling book “Mastering the Art of French Cooking” is a master piece not just for the average home kitchen hero but also for the professional crowd. But without getting into all her stuff, what I am very amazed about is the GUT she had when deciding to change her live at an age where others would settle into what I call “Waiting For Retirement” face.
With absolute dedication and fearless head on approach she became what we know the “Master of French Cuisine” facing many hurdles and problems along the wayand with pure will power and a goal in mind overcoming such obstacles and turning herself into a well known Author and Kitchen Icon until her death in 2004. Her dream of bringing the best of the cooking world into viewers living rooms is the legacy she will leave behind. Of course on top of many others.
Which brings me to a quick story about a woman from Texas living in NY City in a tiny apartment with a tiny kitchen and her goal was to cook 524 Julia Child recipes in 1 year. Her name is Julie Powell and many of you might remember the movie Julie and Julia. Julie started a blog to keep record of her daily operations and recipes she cooked, which became a huge hit with a ton of followers and than eventually leading to book deals, movie deals etc etc.
My whole point I am trying to make here is, here we have 2 women, both are success stories, both had to face the worst hurdles possible head on, I am talking about frustration, near quitting and a goal which seemed to be logical in the beginning but as the projects went on seemed to be unreachable. But both stuck with what they set out to accomplish and that is what made them successful.
So what should you learn from Julia and Julie,
- It all starts with the Idea/Goal
- Knowing what you have to do to reach it
- Except hurdles/road blocks along the way and face them head on or go around them
- Never give up, always keep your goals in front of you
- Do whatever it takes to get to the final destination
In business no matter what you do you must remember the work you put into should reflect on your bank account. Facing ups and downs is part of both Life and Business it is a given that everyone will experience it. So take it step by step, don’t try to cut corners learn from yourself and your mistakes and make it better. Like Julia face everything head on and BELIEVE in what you are doing.
It really doesn’t matter where you get inspiration from, it doesn’t have to be just in your industry go beyond the borders, look for it and you will find it all around you. Learn from it and use it.
